While there are a few similarities between classic car insurance and normal car insurance policies, there are a few important differences, as well. The main difference is what vehicle qualifies for classic car insurance versus normal car insurance.
To purchase classic car insurance, your vehicle must qualify as a classic car in the eyes of your insurers. As a rule, classic vehicles must be at least 20 years of age (or older) and under 45 years of age with less than 7,500 miles driven per year.
Shared Coverages for Classic Car and Normal Car Insurance
Both of these car insurance plans offer basic coverages such as:
-
Comprehensive Coverage: Comprehensive coverage provides compensation for damages to your vehicle caused by fire, wind, hail, lightning, smoke, theft, vandalism and other incidents not involving collision.
-
Collision Coverage: Collision coverage provides compensation for damages to the vehicle caused by a collision with another vehicle or object.
-
Liability: Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause while operating the insured vehicle.
-
Medical Payments Coverage: Medical payments coverage provides compensation for medical bills you and your passengers may face after an accident, no matter who caused the accident.
-
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: This insurance covers damages involved in an accident with another driver who is not carrying insurance.
-
Roadside Assistance: Roadside assistance covers trip interruption expenses such as running out of gas or needing to be towed.
For a normal car, this would generally be considered a full coverage auto insurance policy. However, there are additional coverages available for your classic vehicle.
Classic car insurance coverages may include:
-
Coverage for Spare Parts: If you have spare parts in case of an accident, classic car insurance can provide compensation if those spare parts are lost or damaged.
-
No Attendance Required: No attendance required covers you while you are away from your vehicle at a show.
-
Traveling Coverage: Since classic cars aren’t generally used for simple transportation, classic car insurance provides traveling coverage which can cover expenses if your vehicle breaks down, such as a rental vehicle, personal items, lodging and food.
Be sure to speak with an insurance agent about what insurance you need for the type of vehicle you own.
